--- Plus 8 Records ---
Plus 8 Records is a Canadian techno label founded in
1990 by Richie Hawtin and John Acquviva. Plus 8 has
been credited by many as an important catalyst of
American rave culture.
By late 1991, Hawtin was regularly djing across the globe
promoting Plus 8, while John remained in Canada running
the label from his home in London, Ontario. Sales were at
an all time high, with singles routinely selling over 10,000
copies. In a short space of time, the label had developed
into a globally recognized concern, a fact reflected in the
constant licensing interest from labels across the world. (1)
Along with their much lauded sublabels, Definitive, Probe,
et al., Plus 8 Records gave birth to a plethora of releases
by Kenny Larkin, Cybersonik (Richie Hawtin, John Acquviva,
and Dan Bell), F.U.S.E. (Richie Hawtin), Speedy J (Jochem
Paap), Plastikman (Richie Hawtin), The Kooky Scientist
(Fred Giannelli), Sysex, et al.
Feeling strongly that the label had achieved its goals,
Hawtin and Acquviva decided to cease operating the Plus 8
imprint in 1997.
Today, Hawtin and company continue the Plus 8 legacy
with their Minus Records imprint.
