The first thing which struck me was the use of fuck as a noun signifying a substance. (The scene described is an orgy among five musketeers and the heroine of the novel.) Later in the essay Norberg, while discussing the genre in general, writes, "Nor do the anatomical facts of sexual difference hinder the prostitute in her search for pleasure, because male and female experience the sexual act in a virtually identical manner. As orgasm approaches, both become delirious and then 'discharge' repeatedly, spewing forth 'waves of hot fuck.' Whore and client are 'drowned,' 'drenched' and 'bathed' in a celestial liquid that is both male and female. The use of the term celestial liquid is interesting. I know that in various newsgroups debates rage from time to time on the subject of female ejaculation. Eighteenth and nineteenth century pornography is full of the imagery of gushing liquid issuing from the genitals of orgasmic women. Perhaps this imagery should be seen as more metaphoric than physiological. The "waves of hot fuck" are not some mysterious bodily fluid but a "celestial liquid" which washes over both male and female "in a virtually identical manner." Because the spurting out of semen in the male is so apparent and obvious, this seemed to constitute the man's contribution to this "celestial liquid". It then followed that there must be a similar contribution from the woman. But is this search for physical fluids misguided? Perhaps there is no female counterpart to semen because semen is unimportant. Perhaps the "waves of hot fuck" have another reality which has nothing to do with the damp spot on the sheets. Lucio
