Actually, they do have some historical ammo here.... During the Zuni / Pueblo rebellion in the 1500s, the Indians of the southwest rose up against the tyranny of the Church and the Spanish. They smashed and burned missions and killed all the priests, calling on Satan to aid them (if the washichu feared him so, he must have power over them). It was a stunning victory for the Indians and devil images became part of the culture. Devil kachina dolls were made. His image was painted on bowls and woven into baskets as medicine against the whites. Many say this is the origin of the devil masks and such used in Dia De Los Muertos celebrations and funerals in the rural areas of Sonora, Mex. It took the Spanish over 15 years to retake the area, and even then they had to compromise. The church changed it's approach DRASTICALLY. The days of inquisition style conversion were replaced by integration. The Virgin was merged with the mythos of Corn Woman and Satan himself got a bushy tail, yellow eyes and in some depictions, the horns were replaced with pointed ears. (woof?!) Most of the artifacts of this time were destroyed over the years by zealous priests, however, some families retain old bowls and such in their homes, just in case they have to do it again (and as a picture-story of the history). The Apache are NOT part of this tradition. At the time, most Apache were on the northern plains and some were in texas, however, being nomadic and eventually being relocated into reservations in the southwest, they were most definitely exposed to this hybrid religion. But a Satanic Apache Front? More white man bullshit. Tall'h'queh apple! >Kevin, know where I can borrow a big axe and a fluffy tail? I don't think our ancestors or the spirits would frown on using one from orchard supply! Hell, I know how to make a war-club..... and hey, whose tail you planning to wear? Wonder if our apple would get nervous if he saw us with nasty big nipple piercings and shaved sides of the head. Hmm, funny how goth overlaps with Blackfoot warrior culture!
