Graves may have come up with the specific titles of "Maiden, Mother, Crone," and he may have defined the triad in his own unique way, but if you look into past mythologies (not just Celtic or Greek), you will see this triad everywhere. I believe the three goddesses can be described by the three phases of the moon (new, waxing, and full) and the colors: black, red, and white. But all of this is not front page news. You do not even need to read myths to see the triad. They are everywhere. Does anybody have any thoughts on what the corresponding male figures might be? There is the triad of Brahma, Shiva, and Vishnu, but somehow that does not seem to be the same triad to me. These gods are usually in conflict while the female triad seems to me to be in cooperation. Maybe that is saying something about the function and character of the sexes and their internal dynamics.
