Gnomes are earth elementals and are ruled by king Ghob. Salamanders are fire elementals and are ruled by kind Djin. Otherwise: Brownies are friendly, scottish, little people that sneek in to clean peoples houses in the middle of the night. They should be left cookies as a reward. Ancient writing potray eleves as human sized, powerful, and charming, but often dangerous. The Banshee carries of the souls of the dead, that's all I know. Some RPGs claim banshees are the spirits of dead female elves, but probably just made that up. Most fairies are thought to be, at least in part, a remeberance of Pagan (mostly Celtic) deities. Hermetic Kabbalists claim these beings are a special type of nature spirit, and their world is related to the Sefirah Netzach. Leprachaun's are thought to be a recent concept by anthropologists. Nyphs and fauns (sytars) are greco-roman imports, and most popular demons are of middle eastern origen (mostly local Pagan deities). I hope that helps!
