The list jap-l is a list for Jewish Pagans, Jewwitches, Jewish mages,
and those interested in Judeopaganism and Semitic Paganism in
general, whether as a practitioner or a scholar or just plain
interested. The name of the list comes from the phrase "Jewish
American Pagan," though, of course, non-Americans are more than
welcome to join as well. Although discussion of the Kabbalah will be
allowed when it overlaps with Judeopaganism, extensive discussions of
the Kabbalah will be asked to move to a different location, unless
they are directly related to Judeopaganism, as this is not a list for
general Jewish mysticism, and there are other net resources for that
topic.
Possible areas of discussion for jap-l are:
- The polytheistic roots of Judaism and the relationship between
other Semitic and ancient Middle Eastern religions and early
Judaism.
- Other deities worshipped by the supposedly monotheistic
Israelites, including gods and goddesses such as Baal, Asherah,
Astarte, etc.
- Hebrew Goddesses, such as Asherah, Astarte, Lilith, the
Shekinah, etc., and feminine images of the divine within more
traditional Judaism.
- The advantages and disadvantages of mixing a Jewish
background/practice with another Pagan or magickal tradition, such
as a Jewwitch (Jewish Wiccan) or JuBu (Jewish Buddhist). For
instance, the differences in approach that coming from a Jewish
background brings to a different path, or the difficulties that
occur when trying to communicate with "Gentile" Pagans.
- Antisemitism in the general Pagan and magickal communities and
ways to combat it and prevent it (ideally through education).
Although as a whole, the Pagan and magickal communities are fairly
open-minded and free of bigotry, there is nevertheless some
antisemitism within both communities. Some of it is obvious, such
as the Neo-Nazi faction of the Germanic and Celtic pagans, but
quite a bit of it is based out of ignorance, such as stating that
"the Jews killed the Goddess" or that "Kabbalah wasn't really
developed by the Jews." Also, many people from a Christian
background tend to assume that since Christianity developed out of
Judaism, both Judaism and Christianity always have the same
attitudes towards most issues. This latter isn't antisemitism per
se but does reflect the general ignorance of Judaism among
non-Jews.
When you start receiving messages from the mailing list, please reply
(to jap-l@hollyfeld.org) with at least a brief hello message, to let
us know that you are indeed receiving messages via the list. If you
have time, please consider posting a message introducing yourself, so
that all of us on the list can get to know each other.
